DENVER– The Denver Outlaws have added Regy Thorpe to the coaching staff, the team announced on Monday. Thorpe, who has coached five Major League Lacrosse seasons, has a total of eight years of coaching experience.
“I am excited to have an opportunity to work with the Denver organization and be a part of Coach O'Hara's staff,” Thorpe said. “He is truly one of the best minds in the game and the opportunity to work with him once again was one that I couldn't pass up. Also, I am looking forward to work with the legendary Tony Seaman. I have heard great things about Jon Cohen as well and look forward to being on the sideline with him. I know expectations are always high in Denver and can't wait to get in the trenches with the Outlaws.”
Thorpe served as the head coach for the Hamilton Nationals from 2011-12, and was an assistant coach with the Rochester Rattlers from 2006-08, working on the staff of Outlaws Head Coach B.J. O’Hara.
Thorpe was part of O’Hara’s 2008 staff that led the Rattlers to the MLL’s Steinfeld Cup title. His career MLL record is 34-28 (.548 pct.). Overall, Thorpe’s teams are 144-62-2 (.697 pct.).
"Having Regy Thorpe join the Outlaws' coaching staff is a huge addition to our team,” O’Hara said. “As an MLL player, assistant coach and head coach, he has enjoyed much success. He knows the League and the players and knows how to win."
Thorpe played 15 seasons for the Rochester Knighthawks of the National Lacrosse League, including two seasons (2008-09) as a player/general manager. He was inducted into the team’s Hall of Fame in 2012. He is also a member of the U.S. Lacrosse Rochester Chapter Hall of Fame, where he was inducted in 2009. In 2011, Thorpe was named to the National Junior College Athletic Association Lacrosse Hall of Fame.
Thorpe also played six seasons (2001-06) for the Rochester Rattlers of the MLL, where he stayed on as an assistant coach following his playing career.
Thorpe played at Herkimer Junior College for two years, where he earned All-America honors and was named the Defenseman of the Year in 1991. He then enrolled at Syracuse and helped the Orange to the national finals in 1992. His senior season, Thorpe earned All-America honors after leading Syracuse to a national title as a team captain.
He was a four-time member of the US Indoor Team (‘02, ‘05, ‘07, ‘10), and served as team captain of the 2007 squad that won the bronze medal at the World Indoor Championship and the 2010 squad that won the Bowhunter Cup. In 2011, he served as an assistant coach for the USA Team at the Bowhunter Cup.
From 2007-09, Thorpe served as head coach for the Six Nations Arrows Junior A team, guiding the squad to the Minto Cup in 2007.
Thorpe joins Jon Cohen as assistants on O’Hara’s 2014 coaching staff.
