Many of the University of Denver’s 2013 graduating class celebrated their achievement at a party with family and friends following the ceremony.
It’s safe to say that Eric Law’s drew the largest crowd.
Hours after graduating with the rest of his class, Law made his Major League Lacrosse debut for the Denver Outlaws at Sports Authority Field at Mile High.
By the end of the night, a diploma was not the only award he earned that day.
Law tied for a team best with four goals and earned Player of the Game honors in Denver’s 22-9 win that tied for the second-largest margin of victory in club history.
“It’s just awesome to graduate from the University of Denver,” Law said. “It was so much fun being there with all my family, town, and college teammates. Being with all those guys this morning and being able to transition tonight and these guys take me under their wing I can’t thank them enough for the opportunity that they give me. It was just so much fun.”
Law, who attended Centennial High School in suburban Denver, did not show any signs of needing to acclimate to the speed of the game at the MLL level.
Playing against professionals for the first time, Law scored all four of his goals in the second half.
“Coming here to Mile High where the Broncos play — they are my favorite team, and I was born a fan watching the team here all the time—to be able to get the opportunity to play here from GM Tony Seaman and Coach is unbelievable,” Law said. “It is a lifelong dream come true for sure.”
After a pair of Hamilton goals in the final minute of the first half cut the Outlaws’ lead to 10-5, Head Coach Jim Stagnitta elected to send Law out with the starters in the second half.
That decision did not take long to pay off as Law scored the first goal of his MLL career just 18 seconds into the second stanza and finished with three in the third quarter alone.
“We started Eric in the second half, and he finished a couple in a row, gave us that separation again,” Stagnitta said. “And we were able to keep that lead. For a guy in his first game, he was terrific.”
