Head Coach B.J. O'Hara's Weekly Conference Call Quotes

On the Outlaws’ Week 2 win over the Ohio Machine
“Actually we were the ones that had to come back. They got up on us 11-7 early in the fourth. We knew they were going to be a handful and they were. They got awfully dynamic offensive players, their goalies played very well, and their defense is very, very strong. So we had to battle and we got out on them early but we didn’t figure that would last. It was nice to see that we were able to hold them the week before so I was very excited to see that we were able to comeback when we were down and make plays in the fourth quarter and get the victory.”

On importance of having a strong faceoff man
“Obviously possessions are also important. Most of the teams in the league have a lot of talent on the offensive ends of the field and (with) an unusual amount of possessions they’re finding ways to score. (Anthony) Kelly’s a guy who can at least get you half of the opportunities. He had a real good day (on Sunday). Beyond that, he’s just a good team leader, he’s a great character in the locker room, he’s a veteran, and he wants a championship really badly before he hangs up his stick, and he’s doing everything he can to try and make that happen.”

On this week’s game against Boston
“Boston obviously is a team with talent everywhere they won the championship a couple years ago and I’m sure they’re excited to try and get back there again. They have probably the marquee player in the game — offensive player in the game — in Paul Rabil. There are a lot of other guys: Kevin Buchanan, Ryan Boyle, Brodie Merrill. They’re up and down an awfully, awfully strong team. You’re right, they did play two very different games (this season). We watched both of them. We’re not sure which Boston we’re going to see but we have to prepare for the best.”

On Anthony Kelly’s durability and who will take draws
“Anthony, he’s not the youngest guy in the league, and keeping him fresh down the stretch is definitely a concern. We do plan to dress Stephen (Robarge) in a number of games, maybe as soon as this week. We also drafted a young fellow by the name of Brent Hiken out of Stevenson so we’re looking at that. Anthony’s our guy, there’s no question about that, but keeping him fresh, keeping him healthy is a concern.”

On John Grant Jr.’s Outlaw debut and role going forward
“(Grant) you know, he needs the ball in his stick, and he’ll have it. We talked to him a little bit abut not looping quite as much into the midfield as he does in indoor so he’s got to get a little bit more used to going behind the goal. (He) doesn’t have a lot of fakes in indoor so he’ll have to bend it a lot so he’s got to get that feel back, work more from the wings. They use a different product in indoors so that stick he had he strung up the night before on the airplane so it was the first time he used it. He didn't look like he had a lot of stamp on his shot. So little things like that I think are going to take a little time, like guys are going to have to get used to moving when he’s got it in his stick and expect it to get to them because he’ll throw it later when they don’t think he will. So we’re excited to have him. He’s won a lot of championships in his day and we’re hoping he can bring some more of that to us.”

On having players from Canadian team on roster
“I think it’s very common. We’ve been through it, when I was with Rochester during the World Games we had a bunch of guys from Canada and the US on the squad. The nice thing is that you realize that the weekend that the MLL is back is the Championship Weekend in the World Games and we play on Sunday that week and the championship is actually on Saturday. We’re Sunday at home so we feel like we should be able to get a number of those guys in uniform for that game, so we won't take as big a hit as on paper it looks like we might.”

The Outlaws (2-0) are the only undefeated team in the league and look to add another win to their 22-game regular-season win streak against the Boston Cannons on Saturday.

Denver is 6-8 all-time against Boston, but has won its last three contests against the Cannons. Boston (1-1) hosted the Outlaws a year ago at Harvard Stadium and fell to Denver 14-10, and lost again in a 24-10 later in the month when the Outlaws hosted.

Denver is coming off its 22nd straight regular-season win after rallying passed the Ohio Machine on Sunday. Its offense has been led by attackers Eric Law and Chris Bocklet. Law has netted seven goals while Bocklet has scored five times and dished for four assists. Outlaw midfielder Jeremy Sieverts has also chipped in with five goals of his own — two of them from two-point range.

On the other side of the field, Denver’s defense has been tough on opponents. Anthony Kelly is third in the league with 14 groundballs and goalie Jesse Schwartzman is allowing an average of just 10.03 goals per game.

“It’s a difficult task playing against a veteran team, a team that really believes in itself and knows how to win,” Boston head coach John Tucker said. “They’re talented across the board.”

Boston’s attack is led by Kevin Buchanan who leads the league in goals with nine. The Cannons also features midfielder Paul Rabil and attacker Will Manny who both have four goals apiece this season. Boston goalie Jordan Burke has allowed just 17 goals in two games — the fewest in the league.

“Boston obviously is a team with talent everywhere. They won the championship a couple of years ago and I’m sure they’re excited to try and get back there again,” Denver head coach B.J. O’Hara said. “They’re up and down an awfully, awfully strong team.”

The Cannons cruised passed the Chesapeake Bayhawks in their first game of the season but fell to the Rochester Rattlers in their Week 2 game, unable to get their offense going.

“They did play two very different games (this season),” O’Hara said. “We watched both of them. We’re not sure which Boston we’re going to see, but we have to prepare for the best.”

The Denver Outlaws (3-0) beat the Boston Cannons (1-2) in a thrilling 10-9 overtime victory on a rainy Saturday evening in Boston. The win extended Denver’s regular-season win streak to 23 games.

Chris Bocklet scored the game-winning goal 56 seconds into overtime after Boston tied up the game at 9-9 in the final 30 seconds of regulation. Bocklet’s goal was his second of the night and he was named the Coca-Cola Player of the Game for his three-point (two goals, one assist) performance.

Eric Law started off strong for the Outlaws, recording two of his three goals in the first quarter. Law would finish the night with four points (three goals, one assist) racking up his third hat trick of the season. The first quarter also marked a milestone for faceoff specialist Anthony Kelly, who took the 2,500th faceoff attempt of his career in Denver.  Denver was a perfect 5-of-5 on first-quarter faceoffs.

The Outlaws took a 3-1 lead into the second quarter, marking the first time all season the Outlaws gave up a first-quarter goal. Boston scored three straight goals in the second quarter, before Domenic Sebastiani netted his first goal of the season to even it up at 4-4 with 8.7 seconds left in the first half.

Due to lightning in the area, the teams left the field for nearly 50 minutes before returning to finish the first half. The teams took another one-minute break and then resumed play with the start of the second half.

Boston added two goals in the third quarter and led 6-4 before Law scored an unassisted goal—his third of the night—to cut the Boston lead to 6-5 heading into the fourth quarter.

Denver took a 9-7 lead, but Boston scored two goals in the last three minutes, tying it up at 9-9 and forcing overtime with Kevin Buchanan’s third goal of the night with just 26 seconds left in regulation.

Bocklet’s shot in the first minute of overtime hit the post and took a bounce right back towards him. He recovered the ball, shot again, and scored the game-winning goal to seal the thrilling victory for the Outlaws.

Goalie Jesse Schwartzman finished the night with the win—his 61st career win—making him the MLL’s all-time winningest goalie.

The game, which lasted two hours, 55 minutes was the ninth longest game in Outlaws history.

The Outlaws return to action next Saturday, May 17 at 7 p.m. MDT when they face the Rochester Rattlers (2-1) at Sports Authority Field at Mile High Stadium.

Head Coach B.J. O'Hara Weekly Conference Call Quotes

On the Outlaws’ Week 3 win over the Boston Cannons
“It was in some ways similar to our two previous games we got off to a pretty good start and then this is a game of runs—they came back on us particularly in the third (quarter). The third quarter hasn’t been our best. Then we looked like we had it closed out in the fourth, we were up two and they came back on us. It was definitely a dramatic game. I liked the way our guys held together and made plays when they needed to down the stretch at both ends of the field. We won some faceoffs when we needed to, and it’s always a good sign when you have a team that can find a way to make play when you need to.”

On MLL’s all-time winningest goalie Jesse Schwartzman
“He’s obviously one of the top goalies in the world, plays on the national team. He’s a veteran in the league. He’s a great stopper. He’s also a real leader in the locker room. Anybody who’s ever gotten up close to him in the game and heard him during the game, you know he’s the leader of our defense, also. So he just brings a lot of personality, a lot of energy and obviously a lot of talent into the field.”

On this week’s game against Rochester
“They’re an awfully good team. I think they gained some momentum going into last year, and they’ve added so many pieces to the puzzle, and they’re playing awfully well. They’re awfully strong in the midfield. They’ve got a lot of good young midfielders that we’re going to have to contend with. [Goalie] John Galloway is playing lights out and their defense is very, very good so we’re going to have our hands full again.”

On taking advantage of second-chance scoring opportunities
“It's not anything that you draw up in the game plan. It’s just some guys that are tenacious and opportunistic and they don't give up on it, and they play every play to the end. The one that was obviously pretty lucky was (the game-winning goal at Boston). It’s not often that you hit the pipe and it comes right back to you and you give yourself the assist. We know that was a little bit of luck but by the same token Chris [Bocklet] was ready for it, got it and great shot the second time. And he does hit the pipe an unusual amount of times when we’re doing shooting drills—uncanny how many times he hits the pipe. So it was not surprising that he did it, but a little lucky that he got it back.”

On the league’s ball change
“I believe that the lack of the grippy ball is hurting the shooting. I know just from watching our guys, an unusual number of balls spray off their sticks than you’d expect. That’s the only thing I can come up with is that might be the issue. They’ll get used to it. As far as the other thing, a lot of times it’s just a function of the lights. Sometime the ball gets caught in the light, or whatever, something like that. I think the orange is actually better than the white. I’d prefer the whole sport of lacrosse goes to a bright green like a tennis ball or women’s softball, but I think there are just issues with trying to produce it and rubber. But that to me would make it better to everyone both the fans and the players.”

On dressing two faceoff men
“It’ll be a week-to-week thing. It depends on if we have the luxury of an extra guy we might take a second faceoff guy. It’ll vary. Sometimes we trust an extra short stick. We’re just kind of tinkering right now trying to figure out what’s our best 19. We’d definitely like to give Anthony [Kelly] some rest. He’s not the youngest guy on the team now and I think he appreciates taking a couple ones off just to stay fresh. I think it’s helped him.”

On offensive production when top scorers are not scoring as much

“Every game I think you have to find ways to score, find what’s working, find the matchups you like. (Boston) had an awfully good defense. They were tough. We only scored 10 goals, for us that’s a little bit light. If we get a little bit more out of Drew [Snider] and Jeremy [Sieverts] in that department than we were up in the 14, 15 (goals) probably. It’s important that we do get production from everybody. We look at that more to initiate a lot of our midfield offense. They’ve played tough games though up and down the field. They played some good defense, got some big groundballs for us and both the goals they scored—Drew and Jeremy’s goals were in the fourth quarter—and they were big ones. So while they didn't have the numbers the certainly contributed very, very much.”

Schwartzman dominates again, becomes winningest goalie

The Outlaws’ overtime win against the Boston Cannons on Saturday marked their 23rd straight regular-season victory. It also marked Jesse Schwartzman’s 61st career win as a goalie—making him MLL’s all-time winningest goalie—so it was only fitting he played a major role in the victory.

Schwartzman saved 24-of-33 shots on goal, including six clutch saves in the fourth quarter and one in overtime. The stellar performance earned him his 11th career Defensive Player of the Week award.

“It’s very special to have the most wins and there are some legends I passed along the way,” Schwartzman said. “So it definitely means a lot. Although I’m a goalie and you get individual awards at times, it’s definitely a team sport and without my great teammates and the great Outlaws organization I definitely couldn’t have done this.”

Following the game, Schwartzman has a save percentage of .603 in 2014 and a goals allowed average of just 9.64, which ranks second in the league for goalies who have played at least 60 minutes this season. His 44 total saves this year also rank second amongst all goalies.

“He’s obviously one of the top goalies in the world,” Denver coach B.J. O’Hara said. “He’s a veteran in the league. He’s a great stopper. He’s also a real leader in the locker room. Anybody who’s ever gotten up close to him in the game and heard him during the game, you know he’s the leader of our defense.”

Schwartzman, who is playing his eighth season in the MLL and eighth year with Denver, is a two-time MLL Goalie of the Year honoree, picking up the accolade in 2009 and in 2013. But he’s more worried about the collective goal.

“In terms of personal goals, I want to lead the league in all the goalie categories,” Schwartzman said. “But obviously I’d trade those all for the main team goal. That’s to lift a Steinfeld Cup at the end of the year. I know our team is hungry and our fans are hungry for one.”

Game Preview: Denver Outlaws vs. Rochester Rattlers

The Outlaws (3-0) return home following a thrilling overtime win last weekend against Boston, which kept their undefeated season alive. On Saturday, when Denver hosts the Rochester Rattlers, it will look to remain the only undefeated team in the league and extend its streak of 23 straight regular-season victories.

The Outlaws are 4-4 against Rochester all-time and have won each of their last four contests dating back to 2012. In two contests last season, Denver outscored the Rattlers, 32-16

Denver is coming off its 23rd straight regular-season win after Chris Bocklet helped it edge out the Boston Cannons with an overtime goal to seal the Outlaws 10-9 win. The goal was Bocklet’s seventh of the season—tied for fifth best in the league. Eric Law has also been a big factor on the Outlaws’ offense; Law has had a hat trick in each game this season and is tied for second in the MLL with 13 points.

Last week’s win was also Jesse Schwartzman’s 61st win, making him the all-time winningest goalie. Schwartzman has been a menace to opponents this season, limiting them to an average of just 9.64 goals against per contest. His 44 total saves ranks second amongst goalies in the league.

Rochester’s offense is led by midfielders Dan Hardy and Justin Turri. The duo has 10 points apiece. On defense, Joel White has scooped 18 ground balls this season, good enough to rank second in the league, and Rattlers’ goalie John Galloway has been solid, posting a .541 save percentage.

“Galloway is playing lights out and their defense is very, very good,” Denver head coach B.J. O’Hara said. “So we’re going to have our hands full again.”

After dropping their first game of the season on the road against the New York Lizards, Rochester (2-1) has edged out its last two opponents at home.

“They’re an awfully good team,” O’Hara said. “I think they gained some momentum going into last year, and they’ve added so many pieces to the puzzle, and they’re playing awfully well. They’re awfully strong in the midfield. They’ve got a lot of good young midfielders that we’re going to have to contend with.”

Outlaws roll past Rochester, 14-8

The Denver Outlaws don’t know how to lose. The last time they did it was June 23, 2012. They do know how to share and they did a lot of it Saturday night — Denver’s first seven goals came from seven different players — as they cruised past the Rochester Rattlers, 14-8.

After allowing Rochester to get on the board first early in the first quarter, Denver closed out the quarter with four unanswered goals. Eric Law got things going for the Outlaws, netting an unassisted goal three minutes into the game to even the score at 1-1. Law assisted later in the quarter to set John Grant Jr. up for a goal. Jeremy Sieverts and Drew Snider also found twine to give Denver a 4-1 advantage heading into the second quarter.

The Rattlers struck first again in the second quarter, but Denver’s Justin Pennington and Cameron Flint both scored on assists from Grant to send the Outlaws into the locker room up 6-2. Grant finished the game with five assists.

Terry Kimener became the seventh different Denver player to score when he netted an unassisted goal to kick off the third quarter. Snider scored his second goal of the quarter to give the Outlaws an 8-2 lead. Denver forced four Rochester turnovers in the third quarter to put the pressure on the Rattlers’ attack and limit it to just two goals in the frame.

Both team’s defenses were strong all night, but in the fourth quarter, the offenses took over. Rochester snuck two goals past Denver goalie Jesse Schwartzman early to cut the lead to 8-6, but Sieverts netted a two-point goal to widen the gap later in the quarter. The goal marked Sievert’s 96th point as an Outlaw to give him the sixth most points all-time amongst Denver players. Less than a minute later, Flint scored his second goal of the game. Rochester scored twice more in the quarter, but the Outlaws ran away with it, scoring the final three goals of the game, including Snider’s third of the night to give him a hat trick.

The win is Denver’s 24th straight regular-season victory—the longest streak in MLL history.

The Outlaws return to action at home against the Charlotte Hound on Friday, May 30, 7:00 p.m. MDT.
