Jim Stagnitta Championship Week Conference Call Transcript

What was the secret to having a successful team in the regular season?
We were pretty consistent throughout the year, there were times when we didn't start out well, but we always finished well. We shot the ball particularly well through most of the year and honestly, it was just a combination of playing good, smart, solid lacrosse. there were points in games where we had a stretch where we weren't making good decisions, but for the most part we were consistent in our decision making, we were extremely consistent in the goal and on the defensive end and I think that is what wins you games.

Are you preparing anything different for the semi-final game against Charlotte?
We get an extra practice in which is great because we need it. We are focused on us, paying attention to what we do and making sure we are doing the things we need to do and focusing on the Outlaws to make sure that we are executing at the level we need to execute to be successful this weekend.

Do you think the week off has hurt your momentum heading into this weekend?
No, I think the level of momentum, the focus and excitement is going to be there. Everyone is in the same situation, they shouldn't have been practicing the last two weeks so we all go in the same way. We have a couple opportunities to practice and we know we'll have everybody there for two full practices, so that is going to help us prepare. I don't think the time off is going to hurt us, I think everybody is excited to start this part of the run. What happened during the regular season doesn't really matter right now. We accomplished what we set out to accomplish early in the year during the regular season. If you look at the records we accomplished that six weeks ago. I think the guys have been playing with some motivation to go undefeated, but maybe not the kind of motivation they played with early in the year. I'm excited to get everybody back together, I know they are too, to play a game where there is truly something on the line.

On winning the Coach of the Year Award
I am not naive enough to think that it doesn't have a whole lot to do with the guys who go out every weekend and play for us. It is certainly a result of their efforts and I'm awfully lucky I have a heck of a staff with great experience that helped us get to this point.

On Individual Players Winning Awards
There are some awfully good players in this league and man for man they match up with Outlaws. Part of it, is that these guys are so unselfish in what they do and so many of them are under the radar that to get one of these awards is great. Jesse Schwartzman (Goalie of the Year)- had a phenomenal season from the first whistle hopefully until the last one this coming weekend. I'm really pleased for him, in my mind he is our MVP. He's been unbelievably consistent throughout and I've been amazed on how he has been able to play week in and week out. Lee Zink (Defenseman of the Year)- until last year, I know he has been an All Star, but I don't think people really realized or appreciated how much of a true professional he is and what a true talent he really is.  Drew Snider (Most Improved Player) has had a great year as well. But, for those two guys  who have been around the league a long time, to see them get this kind of recognition it's certainly well deserved and for them to play at the level they are playing at in this point in their careers its amazing. I'm particularly pleased for those two guys (Schwartzman and Zink).

Denver has been to the playoffs every year, but has not come away with a championship. How troubling is that history?
I don't know, I wasn't here until last year and I know why we lost last year. History doesn't mean a whole lot to me, honestly, and maybe for the two guys on the team who have been there for that period of time, but most of our guys that played last year, that was their first year in the finals. So that doesn't impact me at all, it doesn't even bother me. It's not an issue with our guys- they want to to win just like everyone else does. I don't know why the history is what it is or what it was because I wasn't there. I know why we lost in the finals last year and we did everything we could as a staff to make sure that wasn't going to be the case this year.

After having the most successful team in the regular season in league history, is it fair to say that anything less than a title would be a disappointment?
I think a lot of people would be disappointed. It's always disappointing when you get to this point and you don't win. But, as I said, this team is focused, they are built for this weekend and we are taking the same approach we took all year and that is focusing on the next game. No one is looking past Saturday. Charlotte has given us fits the two times we played and I know that they are going to be prepared and ready to go. We are healthy right now and that is the big difference from when we went into this last year.

What is it about Charlotte that has given you fits when you've played them this season?
I think they are very athletic, they run the field well and they are dangerous in the unsettled situations. Mike (Cerino) is a very good coach, somebody I go way way back with and I have a lot of respect for. They have a plan, and they prepare well and they've gotten better as they year has gone on. They are probably the team in the league that plays the most like us. They are very athletic from the defensive end going back to the offensive end. They have the ability to score goals. We've been able to score goals on them, but they've been a team who has been able to put up numbers on us as well. They are playing their best lacrosse down the stretch, so as an outsider looking in their rookies have seemed to bolster their lineup. But, they didn't fill their lineup with rookies, they've filled it with guys who have won national championships and who have played big games. So the transition tends to be a little bit easier when you have guys who have played in that kind of environment.

MVP Voting Illustrates Outlaws' Team-First Mentality

DENVER – While the Outlaws tied a league record with four individual year-end honors on their way to becoming the first undefeated team in MLL history, no Outlaw took home the most coveted year-end honor – the MVP Award.

That went to Hamilton’s Kevin Crowley, who also won the league’s Offensive Player of the Year Award.
While the fact that an undefeated team didn’t produce the league’s most valuable player might seem like an oversight, those who watched the Outlaws this season shouldn’t be surprised.

Because who is the Outlaws’ most valuable player?

Is it the goalie of the year, Jesse Schwartzman, who set a record for lowest goals-against average in league history and led just about every goalie category this year?

What about the league’s defenseman of the year, Lee Zink, who took opponents’ top attackmen and held them to less than one goal per game?

If you’re looking at the team’s offense that came one goal shy of the league record, you’d turn your attention to Chris Bocklet, who led the league with 42 goals on his way to a new franchise record in that category?

Then there’s the feeder.

Brendan Mundorf, last year’s MVP, played an injury-shortened season but still paced the team and ranked third in the league with 1.6 assists per game.

Transitioning from defense to offense is where the Outlaws were especially dangerous in 2013.

Those unsettled situations were where Drew Snider took advantage in 2013. Sinder was named the league’s most improved player after scoring 21 more goals and 34 more total points than he did his rookie season in 2012. He netted the third-most goals of any midfielder in 2013, coming in right behind the league MVP in Crowley and Boston’s Paul Rabil. Not bad company.

Also lighting up the net this year was Jeremy Sieverts, who ranked third on the team and eighth in the league with 44 points this year. Sieverts made defenses cover all the way out to the two-point arc, where he buried six long-distance shots to tie for second in the league in that category.

There’s six viable MVP candidates right there.

The league’s coaches and general managers thought so too as each of those six players received votes on the MVP ballot. Only 10 players earned MVP votes and more than half of them came from Denver. If you add the votes up, Denver received two first-place, 11 second-place and seven third-place votes.

If an opponent gameplanned around shutting down one offensive option, there were five others to step up and find the back of the net.

If an opposing offensive player beat his Outlaws defender, Schwartzman was there to make the save.
And that’s why the Outlaws were so successful in 2013.

The unselfish, team-first culture installed by General Manager Tony Seaman and 2013 MLL Coach of the Year Jim Stagnitta has resulted in a roster that has put together a league-best 25-3 (.893 pct.) record over the past two seasons.

The fact that an Outlaw didn’t win the MVP award isn’t surprising.

It’s the reason the team became the first in league history to finish a regular season undefeated.

Five Outlaws Earn All-MLL Honors

DENVER Attackman Chris Bocklet, attackman Brendan Mundorf, goalie Jesse Schwartzman, midfielder Jeremy Sieverts and defenseman Lee Zink were named to the 2013 All-MLL Team, the league announced on Friday.

The five Outlaws on the All-MLL Team represented the most from any one team in a single season in league history.

Bocklet earned his first All-MLL honor after leading the league with 42 goals and tied for the MLL lead with 55 points this season. He posted the highest goal and point improvement of all MLL players between from the 2012 season with a 25-goal and 35-point improvement over his 2012 totals in those categories.

Mundorf earned his fourth career All-MLL honor (2009, ’11-13) and third in a row after scoring 23 goals with 18 assists for 18 games despite playing an injury-plagued 11 games. His 18 assists led the team and ranked sixth in the league.

Schwartzman was named to his second All-MLL squad (2009, ‘13) after earning the league's Goalie of the Year Award in 2013. He set a new single-season record with a 9.67 goals-against average and also led the league in save percentage (.597 pct.), two-point goals allowed (3) and wins (14).

Sieverts made his first All-MLL team after ranking eighth in the league with 44 points, tying for 10th with 27 goals and tying for second with six two-pointers in 2013. He netted five hat tricks and shot a career-best .318 pct.

Zink earned his fourth All-MLL selection (2009, ’11-13) and third in a row after being named the league’s Defenseman of the Year Award for the second-straight season… He captained a defense that allowed a league low 139 points and just three two-point goals on his way to his seventh-straight MLL All-Star selection.

As the league’s top playoff seed, the Outlaws will play in the MLL semifinals against the Charlotte Hounds at 1 p.m. EDT on Saturday, Aug. 24 at PPL Park in Philadelphia. That game will be broadcast live on ESPN2.

Game Preview: Semi-final game vs. Charlotte

Opponent: Charlotte Hounds
When: Saturday, August 24, 11 a.m. MDT
Where: PPL Park- Philadelphia, PA
Broadcast: ESPN 2
All-time vs. Charlotte:  4-0

Match-up: The Denver Outlaws go into this game undefeated (14-0) and the favorite to take home the Steinfeld Trophy. However, they face a hot Charlotte team who made it to the post-season in just their second year in the league. Although the Outlaws beat the Hounds by a combined 11 points in their two regular season match ups, Charlotte was the only team that was able to score more than 15 points on the Outlaws dominant defense.

History: The Outlaws have won all four match ups with Charlotte in their short history. In the season opener, the Hounds were able to score more points than any other team on the Outlaws all season, but the Outlaws got their first victory of their historic season with a 21-16 victory.   The second game between the two teams of the season ended in a similar fashion, a 17-11 win for the Outlaws.

Last Game: The Denver Outlaws became the first team in MLL history to go undefeated with their 18-12 win over the Hamilton Nationals. It was a close game, but once again the Outlaws were able to power through in the fourth quarter to win a hard-fought game against a playoff team. Charlotte ended their season with a 14-16 loss to the Bayhawks, which setup the Bayhawks number two seed in Championship Weekend and guaranteed the Hounds would face Denver in the semi-finals.

When Denver has the Ball:Denver's scoring efforts are led by Chris Bocklet who ended the regular season with the most goals in the league and tied for points with Hamilton's Kevin Crowley. Veteran Brendan Mundorf sat the last few games out to heal a nagging injury, but should come into this weekend healthy and ready to be the difference that he wasn't able to be in last year's Championship games (he was injured during practice the day before the semi-finals). Plus, the midfielder duo of Jeremy Sieverts (last season's Most Improved Player) and Drew Snider (who snagged the award this year) will be a threat for the Hounds defense.

When Charlotte has the Ball: The Hounds are led by Attackman Matt Danowski who finished fourth in the league with 49 points in the regular season. A seasoned veteran, Danowski has been to Championship Weekend twice before (with the Lizards in 2009 and 2010), something that will surely help this young Charlotte team.

When Nobody has the Ball: Face-off specialist Anthony Kelly will be suiting up for his second Championship Weekend with the Outlaws and owns a 55% winning record this season. He'll be facing off against either Tim Fallon or Geoff Snider who won 45% and 57% of their face-offs respectively.

Battle in Net: Outlaws goalie Jesse Schwartzman won his second Goalie of the Year award of his career this past week. No one can argue that there is a better goalie in the MLL right now, but Charlotte's Adam Ghitelman ended the season on a hot streak and has been very consistent in the net for the Hounds.

sdfsd Tune into the semi-final game on ESPN2 at 11am MDT on Saturday, August 24th. If you are in Denver, join us at Punch Bowl Social for the official Denver Outlaws Championship Weekend Watch Party!

Eric Law Postgame Interview

Outlaws Season Ends with 17-14 Loss

PHILADELPHIA — It had been 364 days since the Outlaws lost a game, but that streak came to an end with a 17-14 defeat to Charlotte in the MLL Semifinals on Saturday.

After Denver scored the game’s opening goal, the Hounds went on an 11-2 run to jump out to a lead that the Outlaws could not recover from. Charlotte won 15-of-20 faceoffs in the first half and turned those possessions into the most goals that the Outlaws allowed in a first half all year.

“We didn’t play well," Head Coach Jim Stagnitta said. "It was a bad day not to play well. We started out tentative, we made every mistake you could possibly make, in the first half, everywhere from shot selection, to substitutions, to just basic fundamental mistakes and we dug ourselves a hole against a pretty powerful team.”

Attackman Eric Law was a bright spot for Denver in the first half as the rookie netted six of the team’s seven goals in the opening half.

“It’s tough. It’s the wrong time of the season to be on the losing end of one. We had a great regular season, but we just got outplayed today. That’s all there is too it.”

The Outlaws closed the half with back-to-back goals to cut the deficit to 13-7 at the break – just the second time the club trailed at the intermission all year.

Denver got back in the game after outscoring Charlotte 3-1 in the third quarter. After Brendan Mundorf netted his first of the game, Law found the back of the net for his seventh goal of the game.

The final goal of the frame turned momentum back to the Outlaws when goalie Jesse Schwartzman took the ball off a restart with :04 on the clock and lobbed a bomb down the field to Zach Greer. Greer jumped up to grab the pass and dumped it in the back of the net to make the score Charlotte 14, Denver 10 entering the final frame.

Denver started the fourth quarter with Eric Law’s MLL postseason-record eighth goal of the game that made it a 6-1 run for the Outlaws dating back to the end of the first half.

“We played better in the second half, but still didn’t play with the patience and take advantage of the opportunities we needed to, to win the game," Stagnitta said. "I give them a lot of credit, they played with a lot of energy and excitement. It just wasn’t out day.”

The Hounds stopped the scoring streak with a 3-0 run of their own that put the game out of reach. Mundorf netted his second of the contest with 2:50 to play and then Law scored his ninth of the game with 1:06 left on the clock.

Law’s nine goals set a MLL postseason record and tied the league mark for any game, as well as established Outlaws records in both categories.

“Right spot, right time,” Law said of the goals. “I was beneficial of guys’ great plays around me. A lot of credit goes to the other guys. ”

His output wasn’t enough however, as Charlotte closed the game with a save off a two-point attempt and ran the clock down to zeros to emerge with the upset victory.

“It doesn’t mean a lot with the loss,” Law said of his record-setting performance. “I’d rather have the win. We’ll get back to work and be ready to go next year.”

Head Coach Jim Stagnitta
Overall impressions:
“We didn’t play well.  Bad day not to play well.  We started out tentative, we made every mistake you could possibly make, in the first half, everywhere from shot selection, to substitutions, to just basic fundamental mistakes and we dug ourselves a hole against a pretty powerful team.”

On the second half:
“We played better in the second half, but still didn’t play with the patience and take advantage of the opportunities we needed to, to win the game.  I give them a lot of credit, they played with a lot of energy and excitement.  It just wasn’t out day.”

On Eric Law’s importance:
“Very important for the future, and was very important this year. He kind of had that first year, start on a high and then take a dip, but came back and really played strong down the stretch.  His effort today was phenomenal, if we had that from top to bottom, you know, it might have been a different outcome.  We’re lucky to have him.”

Attackman Eric Law
Impressions on the game:
“We just got outplayed.  They outplayed us and brought the energy from the start and we didn’t match it.  They did a great job at the face off “X” and getting ground balls and we got outworked in the first half. Gave a good fight in the second half, but it wasn’t quite enough to get it done.”

On his rookie season and setting the MLL Champ Weekend Single Game Goals Record
“I had a great season because of the great teammates around me and the style we play, everyone gets the accolades.  I’m excited to come back next year; we will be hungry and use this as fuel for the whole offseason and come back and hopefully get it done Championship Weekend.”

Denver Defenseman Lee Zink
On what went wrong today:
“I think we just got down early, you know they got a couple early shots, and we couldn’t match their intensity in the beginning.  Just dug too big of a hole.”

Below is a blog from attackman Eric Law about his first MLL Championship Weekend experience. The rookie set an MLL postseason record with nine goals in Denver's semifinal loss to Charlotte. Those nine goals tied the league record for most scored in any game.

After a long bye-week, I was so anxious and excited to get to Philly. The week off was a great time for the guys to get some rest and make sure our legs and bodies were going to be in the best shape for championship weekend.

Most of the guys were able to get in Thursday night and we were even able to get a good practice in. It was great to be able to move around and get a sweat in after a day of travel. The team was focused and everyone looked hungry for the game. Going back to the hotel, it was tough to sit and wait a whole day to play a game we have all been waiting to play all year. Friday morning came and we had an afternoon practice at PPL Park. It was a great venue and great place to play a lacrosse game. We had a shoot around to make sure we all knew our assignments and what we were going to be doing for the game. After practice we headed back to the hotel for a little before we had a team dinner with all of the wonderful staff that traveled with us at Maggiano’s Italian restaurant (My personal favorite). It was a wonderful meal and spirits were high, as we couldn’t wait for the game the next day. It took my roommate Roger Ferguson and I awhile to fall asleep because we were so excited.

On game day we had a team breakfast at the hotel restaurant, which was also very delicious. It was good to get up and get a good breakfast in before the biggest game of the year. After breakfast it was finally time to head to the game.

It was a tough pill to swallow coming into the locker room after the game knowing that Charlotte played better than us and beat us. They came out on fire and we did not match their intensity. They are an extremely talented team and played great team ball from top to bottom. I was so proud of the way our team fought back and made it a game in the second half and I’m convinced that if we had another quarter we could have pulled it off but dug ourselves into a hole too early. The feeling of disappointment an letting down the Outlaws nation will sit with everyone on the team as we will use it as motivation to come back bigger, better and stronger for next season.

A big thank you needs to go out to everyone in the Outlaws organization for the first class attitude and ways. Another thanks needs to go out to the coaches, owners, cheerleaders, front office, and last but certainly not least, our fans. You guys are the best in the league and it is only a matter of time when we bring home the trophy for you guys. It’s not a question of it, but more when it will happen. I truly am so honored and blessed to have the opportunity to be apart of the Outlaws organization, and would not want to be apart of any other team.

The Outlaws will be hungry and ready for 2014. Although this season we set many new records, 2014 has a lot of #UnfinishedBusiness to be done and had. A team championship means so much more than individual accolades and I think all my teammates would say the same.

Outlaws Set MLL Wins Record, Improve to 13-0

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. — For just the second time all year – and second week in a row – the Outlaws faced a second-half deficit.

But just as they did IN Week 12 vs. Chesapeake, the Outlaws used a fourth-quarter surge to take the lead over the New York Lizards and never look back on their way to another victory.
The 13-10 win marked the 13th of the season for Denver, which sets a new Major League Lacrosse record for most victories in a season. Denver has already locked up the league’s winningest season in terms of win percentage.
The Lizards jumped on the board first with an unassisted tally by Kevin Unterstein 3:12 into the game. The teams traded goals throughout the first frame with Justin Pennington and Jeremy Sieverts scoring for Denver and Jo-Jo Marasco and Stephen Mock joining Unterstein in the stat sheet for New York.
Denver got back-to-back scores from Chris Bocklet and Sieverts, each of whom would finish with a hat trick, to open the second stanza and give the Outlaws their first lead of the game at 4-3.
Rob Pannell converted an Outlaws turnover into an open-net goal to knot the game at 4-4 at the 6:13 mark of the second quarter.
Denver regained the edge on a Zack Greer goal off the ensuing faceoff, but Marasco scored his second of the game to tie the game once again at the 9:09 mark.
Sieverts netted his third of the game to once again put the Outlaws ahead, but David Earl found the back of the net with six seconds left in the first half to send the game into the intermission deadlocked at 6-6.
New York scored a pair of goals 39 seconds apart to give the Lizards three tallies in just 45 seconds of game time and open a two-goal lead. New York’s two-goal lead tied the largest second-half advantage an opponent has held against the Outlaws this season.
Chris Bocklet, who earned Player of the Game honors for the third time this season, got his second goal of the night with an assist from Pennington to cut the Lizards’ lead to one at 8-7.
Off the next faceoff, the Bocklet brothers kept it in the family to tie the game once again. Matt Bocklet scooped up the ground ball on the faceoff and fed Chris in the offensive zone. Chris then passed it back to a cutting Matt, who buried his second goal of the year.
While there have been a few goals during the two siblings’ time together on the Outlaws where the defenseman, Matt, has assisted the attackman, Chris, this was the first time that Chris has assisted on one of Matt’s goals.
Marasco and Drew Snider traded tallies to end the quarter, sending the game into the final frame tied at 9-9.
After leading going into the fourth quarter for the first 11 games of the season, Denver has found itself tied going into the fourth quarter in each of the past two weeks. Just as they did a week ago, the Outlaws went on a run to take a lead that they never relinquished.
Pennington took just 25 seconds to score off the opening faceoff, then Terry Kimener and Chris Bocklet found the back of the net to give Denver a three-goal lead that represented the largest advantage for either team.
Earl scored with 5:19 left, but a goal from Eric Law with just under two minutes to play sealed the MLL-record 19th-consecutive regular-season victory for the Outlaws.
Denver will play its final chapter in its quest for the league’s first undefeated season next weekend at Hamilton. That game faces off at 3 p.m. EDT at Ron Joyce Stadium.
The Outlaws have already clinched the MLL’s top playoff seed for Championship Weekend presented by smartlink. Denver will play the league’s No. 4 seed at 1 p.m. EDT on Saturday, Aug. 24 at PPL Park in Philadelphia.
POSTGAME NOTES

  • Chris Bocklet, who earned his third Player-of-the-Game Award this season (5th career), scored three goals to increase his MLL lead to 38.
  •  Bocklet took over the MLL lead, becoming the first player in the league to reach the 50-point mark this season.
  • Bocklet’s 50 points are the second-most in Outlaws history (Mundorf, 59, 2012) and his 38 goals tie the club record (Brown, 2006).
  • Matt Bocklet picked up four ground balls to increase his season total to 69, which ranks fifth in the league and represent the third-most in team history (most by a non-faceoff man).
  • While the Bocklet brothers have combined for an assist and goal before, it has always been defenseman Matt Bocklet with the assist on attackman Chris Bocklet’s goal. This week, they reversed roles as Matt executed a give-and-go after picking up a loose ball from a faceoff, passing to Chris and then getting it back for a score in the third quarter.
  •  Anthony Kelly won four faceoffs to set a team record with 189 faceoff wins on the season.
  • Denver’s win marked its 19th regular-season victory in a row dating back to last season, extending the MLL record that the Outlaws have set in that category.
  • The Outlaws’ 13th win of the season establishes a new league record for most victories in a single season.
  • At 13-0, the Outlaws have clinched the league’s best regular-season win percentage for a single season. Even if Denver loses in the regular-season finale next week, its record would be 13-1 (.929 pct.), which would top the previous record (10-2, .833 pct., four teams).

DENVER The Outlaws have acquired attackman John Grant Jr., defenseman Michael Simon and the 16th pick in the 2014 Collegiate Draft from the Bayhawks in exchange for attackman Brendan Mundorf.

“It was an opportunity for us to fill a couple of the needs that we saw this year,” Outlaws Head Coach Jim Stagnitta said. “I think that we felt like we got two great players for one great player. We felt like it was a great opportunity for us. We’re going to miss Brendan, and he’s done so much for us and our program, but we’re pleased to add John Grant Jr., who lives in Denver and Mike Simon has a chance to be one of the most dominant defenders in the game moving forward.”

Grant Jr. has played in the league since its inaugural season in 2001 and ranks third in MLL history in goals (253), fifth in assists (131) and third in points (403).

He has scored 20 goals in each of the past two seasons with the Bayhawks, totaling 32 points in both campaigns as well. Denver will be the fifth MLL team that Grant Jr. has played for, having spent time with Rochester, Toronto/Hamilton, Long Island and Chesapeake.

Simon is a four-year veteran who played a career best nine games, picking up 16 ground balls and scoring his first career goal in 2013.

Mundorf earned his fourth All-MLL honor and third in a row in 2013 after scoring 23 goals with 18 assists for 18 games despite playing an injury-plagued 11 games. His 18 assists led the team and ranked sixth in the league. He departs as the Outlaws’ all-time leader in goals (229), assists (118) and points (347).

“First of all I’d like to say that my time in Denver was very special,” Mundorf said in a Bayhawks press release. “I want to thanks the fans and my teammates for a great 8 years there. I am excited about moving to the Bayhawks. I know the franchise well and I have a lot of friends on the team. I am looking forward to playing at home and gearing up for another successful season.”

DENVER The Outlaws have acquired midfielder Dom Sebastiani and a first-round pick (8th overall) in the 2014 MLL Collegiate Draft from the Chesapeake Bayhawks in exchange for defenseman Brian Megill, the team announced on Monday.

“Dom Sebastiani makes us a better all-around lacrosse team and especially at the defensive end of the field,” General Manager Tony Seaman said. “He had an outstanding playoff with the Bayhawks and will be a positive addition to our team. We also were looking to make our team younger through the college draft and by picking up a first round draft choice this trade will help us accomplish that goal.”

Denver now has three draft picks in the first two rounds of the 2014 Collegiate Draft, which will take place on Friday, Jan. 10 in Philadelphia.

Sebastiani completed his first MLL season in 2013, picking up five ground balls in five regular-season games and one playoff contest for the Bayhawks. He appeared in the team’s 10-9 victory in the league’s championship game.

The 6-foot, 190-pound midfielder was drafted 32nd overall by the Bayhawks during the 2013 Collegiate Draft out of Delaware.

“I've only heard positive things about the Outlaws organization and played there once this past season,” Sebastiani said. “It is such an amazing stadium. I think my game fits well with Outlaws. They like a fast, transition-style of lacrosse and I've always loved playing like that. ”

Megill played nine games for Denver as a rookie in 2013. His 26 ground balls ranked sixth on the squad and his nine appearances tied Eric Law for the most games by a rookie last season. Megill was drafted by Denver in the first round (7th overall) in the 2013 MLL Collegiate Draft.

Monday’s trade marks the second deal between the Outlaws and Bayhawks of the 2013-14 offseason. Denver acquired attackman John Grant Jr., defenseman Michael Simon and the 16th pick in the 2014 Collegiate Draft from the Bayhawks in exchange for attackman Brendan Mundorf on Friday, Sept. 6.

The club also assigned midfielder Landon Carr to its practice squad and waived midfielder Dylan Sheridan on Monday.

DENVER The Outlaws on Friday announced that they have promoted B.J. O’Hara as the team’s Head Coach after Jim Stagnitta stepped down from the position.

O’Hara will enter his 11th MLL season in 2014 and his 38th overall as a lacrosse coach. O’Hara has posted a career coaching record of 231-170 (.576 pct.) through his first 37 years of coaching.

“We are very happy to announce the appointment of BJ O’Hara as the new head coach of the Denver Outlaws,” General Manager Tony Seaman said. “He has brought a great deal of MLL experience as well as college success to the Outlaws over the past two years as an assistant coach. We are all very excited that he is taking over the leadership role.”

O’Hara has served as an assistant coach for the Outlaws since 2012, helping the team post a league-best 25-3 record (.893 pct.). Denver has outscored opponents 465-307 in that time period with that 159-goal differential leading all MLL teams in that span.

O’Hara helped coach a team that set 21 team records and 10 MLL records in 2013 on its way to become the first in MLL history and just the fourth team in North American major pro sports to finish a season undefeated. Denver’s 14-0 record set a league mark for most wins in a season.

In his first season as an assistant coach for the Outlaws, the team set franchise records in in wins (11), goals (229), assists (116), ground balls (482) and shooting percentage (.348).

“I am extremely excited to be named as Head Coach of the Denver Outlaws,” O’Hara said. “I am especially grateful for the confidence that the Outlaws’ front office, in particular, Tony Seaman, showed towards me by offering this opportunity. I look forward to working together with the entire staff with the goal of bringing the 2014 Major League Lacrosse Championship to the city of Denver. We have a very talented and dynamic roster, and I know that this team is built to contend for the title. I can’t wait to get back on the field and work towards that ultimate goal.”

Stagnitta resigns following a season in which he led the Outlaws to the first undefeated season in MLL history and earned the league’s Coach of the Year Award. In his two seasons as the team’s head coach, Denver put together a league-best 25-3 record with the team’s 25 wins under his leadership representing the most in a two-year span in league history.

“We want to thank Jim Stagnitta for two outstanding years as the head coach of the Denver Outlaws,” Seaman said. “What he was able to accomplish this past year, no other MLL coach has ever accomplished. We want to wish him the very best of luck in his new endeavors.”
