DENVER The Denver Outlaws have added Jon Cohen, who has been the team’s assistant general manager for the past three seasons, to the coaching staff, the club announced on Thursday. Cohen will continue to work as the Outlaws’ assistant general manager in addition to his assistant coaching duties.

Cohen will help the coaching staff with substitutions as well as advance scouting work.

“The Denver Outlaws welcome Jon Cohen to our coaching staff for the 2014 season,” General Manager Tony Seaman said. “We believe that he is an outstanding addition to Head Coach B.J. O'Hara's staff.  His technical lacrosse skills speak for themselves and his organizational skills are second to none.”

Cohen finished his third season as the team’s assistant general manager in 2013, helping with a club that became the first in MLL history to finish a season undefeated. Denver set 21 team records and 10 MLL records in 2013 on its way to become the first team in MLL history and just the fourth team in North American major pro sports to finish a regular season undefeated.

Cohen enters his eighth season with the Outlaws in 2014 having worked as a visiting team liaison (2007), head equipment manager (2008-10) and assistant general manager (2011-13).

Overall, Denver has a 64-24 (.727 pct.) record in Cohen’s time with the club, which represents the best record in the league in that span. In his three years as assistant general manager, Denver has amassed a 32-8 (.800 pct.) record with a +179 goal differential that is more than 100 goals better than the second-highest differential in that span.

The second-longest tenured member of the team’s player/coach roster behind defenseman Lee Zink, Cohen has worked under four head coaches in his first seven years with the Outlaws. Denver has made the playoffs in all seven seasons that Cohen has been on the club’s staff.

"The Denver Outlaws are a first-class organization,” Cohen said. “It has been an amazing experience working alongside such passionate and knowledgeable general managers in Brian Reese and Tony Seaman. I look forward to helping Coach O'Hara and the rest of the staff this season. I would like to thank Mac Freeman, Coach O'Hara, Tony Seaman, and the rest of the Outlaws organization for giving me this opportunity."

Last Friday, the Outlaws front office volunteered at the Ronald McDonald House in Aurora. We prepared lunch for the families who are living in the house, while their children are receiving treatment in the hospital. We made baked potatoes, chili and salad and then served it to approximately 35 people who stopped by the kitchen for lunch. It was such a fun and rewarding experience for our staff!
The families are always so appreciative of a home cooked meal, as many of them are far away from home and here in Denver to be near their seriously ill or injured child. They are always looking for folks to cook meals so please click here for more information on how you can volunteer.

DENVER The Outlaws’ 14-game 2014 schedule was announced by Major League Lacrosse on Friday. The slate for the club’s ninth MLL season includes seven home games that will be played at Sports Authority Field at Mile High and seven road games.

The Outlaws will play games on one Thursday, two Fridays and three Sundays in addition to eight Saturday contests in 2014. This year’s schedule includes bye weeks for Memorial Day and the World Games.

Game times and broadcast schedules have not yet been released.

Once again, the Outlaws will host a Fourth of July Celebration game on July 4, with a fireworks show following the game against the Boston Cannons. Last season, the team broke the professional outdoor lacrosse attendance record with 31,019 fans attending the team’s 16-7 win against the New York Lizards.

Denver opens its season on the road for the third consecutive season. The Outlaws will visit the MLL’s newest franchise, the Florida Launch, for the club’s inaugural game on Saturday, April 26 to kick off the season.

The Outlaws play their home opener against Ohio the following weekend on May 4, which is one of the club’s three Sunday contests on the schedule.

Denver takes the road again in Week 3 for a game at Boston on Saturday, May 10, before hosting Rochester on Saturday, May 17 in the final game before the Memorial Day bye week.

The Outlaws play Charlotte, which was the only club to defeat Denver in 2013, in back-to-back weeks following the Memorial Day bye. Denver hosts Charlotte on Friday, May 30 and then visits the Hounds on Saturday, June 7. Those games will mark the sixth time in Outlaws history that the team has played the same opponent in back-to-back weeks. Charlotte earned a 17-14 victory against Denver in the semifinal round of the Steinfeld Cup playoffs to end the Outlaws’ undefeated season in 2013.

Denver returns home for its only homestand of the season with consecutive games at Sports Authority Field against New York on Saturday, June 14 and a contest versus the defending MLL champions, Chesapeake, on Saturday, June 21.

The MLL All-Star Game will take place on Thursday, June 26 at Harvard Stadium in Boston. The MLL All-Stars will match up against Team USA as the national team prepares for the 2014 Federation of International Lacrosse World Championships that begin on July 10 in Denver.

Just three days after the All-Star Game, the Outlaws will be back in action with a game at Rochester on Sunday, June 29, 2014.

Denver returns home for the club’s ninth annual Independence Day celebration game on Friday, July 4. A total of 219,606 fans have watched the Outlaws’ fireworks games with the team amassing a 6-2 record in those contests. Each of these games has set an attendance record, breaking the one set by the Independence Day celebration game the year before.

After the Fourth of July matchup, the Outlaws will have 16 days off as the league takes a bye week for the FIL World Championships.

Denver plays its final home game of the season on Sunday, July 20 as the Florida Launch take their first trip to the Mile High City.

The Outlaws finish the season with three consecutive games on the road. The team travels to Columbus for a matchup against the Ohio Machine on Saturday, July 26. The team then plays its only Thursday game of the season at Chesapeake on July 31 before finishing the regular season at New York on Saturday, Aug. 9.

DENVER The Denver Outlaws have acquired midfielder Cameron Flint and a sixth-round collegiate draft choice (43rd overall) from Boston in exchange for midfielder Will Mangan and a first-round pick (8th overall).

Flint, who was a three time All-American at the University of Denver, scored eight goals and assisted on nine others for a total of 17 point in seven games as a rookie last year for the Cannons. He earned Major League Lacrosse’s Cascade Rookie of the Week Award after a four-goal, one-assist outing in Boston’s 13-10 win in Week 9.

“As a rookie in the MLL last season, Cameron Flint showed that he can be one of the up-and-coming stars of the league,” Outlaws General Manager Tony Seaman said. “We feel that he is a great fit for our organization.  A key contributor to the success of DU's NCAA Playoff teams while he was in college, he is a natural fit to continue his professional career with the Outlaws.”

Flint was selected with the sixth overall pick in last year’s MLL collegiate draft by Boston after a career in which he scored 103 goals with 35 assists at the University of Denver. He finished his career with the Pioneers ranked sixth in goals and 10th in total points. A four-time all-ECAC member, Flint earned a spot on the Tewaaraton watch list his senior season. Flint was the fourth overall selection by Minnesota in the 2013 National League Lacrosse draft.

Along with their eighth-overall choice in this year’s draft, the Outlaws sent midfielder Will Mangan to Boston. The third-year player scored eight goals with three assists in his first season for Denver last year, duplicating his stat line from his rookie season with Long Island. In 18 career games, Mangan has totaled 16 goals, six assists with 20 ground balls.

Flint joins fellow University of Denver alums Dillon Roy (2010) and Eric Law (2013) on the Outlaws’ roster. Flint and Roy played one season together at the University of Denver (2010), while Flint and Law spent three seasons as teammates with the Pioneers (2011-13).

DENVER The Denver Outlaws have acquired midfielder Roy Lang from Florida in exchange for goalie Adam Fullerton, the team announced on Monday.

Lang (6-3, 205 pounds) has scored 23 goals with three assists for 26 points in two Major League Lacrosse seasons. He opened his career with Rochester, scoring 14 goals with three assists for 17 points, while adding 26 ground balls in 13 games as a rookie.

“Roy Lang is an excellent all-around athlete and plays well at both ends of the field,” Outlaws General Manager Tony Seaman said. “He gives us the ability to transition the ball from the defensive end to the offensive end and is always a threat to score goals. His addition to our team gives us another all-around midfielder with valuable MLL experience.”

Last season, Lang tallied nine goals and picked up 27 ground balls in 12 games for Hamilton. He was originally drafted with the 11th overall pick in the 2012 MLL collegiate draft by Rochester.

A two-time All-American at Cornell University, Lang played 65 games with 43 starts and posted 68 goals with 23 assists for 91 total points with 127 ground balls and 32 forced turnovers in his college career.

Lang was traded from Rochester along with the 11th overall pick in the 2013 MLL Collegiate Draft to Ohio in exchange for midfielder Dan Groot and the 17th, 20th and 38th selections in the 2013 Collegiate Draft. He was later traded from Ohio to Hamilton along with Ohio’s first-round draft choice in the 2015 Collegiate Draft in exchange for goalie Scott Rodgers, defenseman Chad Wiedmaier and Hamilton’s second-round pick in the 2014 Collegiate Draft.

Fullerton, who is entering his seventh MLL season in 2014, has played 12 games, totaling 252 minutes in net and has allowed 56 goals with one two-pointer for a goals-against average of 13.3. He has made 64 saves with a .533 save percentage. In addition, he has made one postseason appearance, spending 1:30 in net. Fullerton spent the last five seasons (2009-13) with Denver after opening his career with Rochester (2008).

Fullerton, a graduate of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, was originally drafted by Rochester in the third round (28th overall) of the 2008 MLL Collegiate Draft.

DENVER The Denver Outlaws have added Regy Thorpe to the coaching staff, the team announced on Monday. Thorpe, who has coached five Major League Lacrosse seasons, has a total of eight years of coaching experience.

“I am excited to have an opportunity to work with the Denver organization and be a part of Coach O'Hara's staff,” Thorpe said. “He is truly one of the best minds in the game and the opportunity to work with him once again was one that I couldn't pass up.  Also, I am looking forward to work with the legendary Tony Seaman. I have heard great things about Jon Cohen as well and look forward to being on the sideline with him. I know expectations are always high in Denver and can't wait to get in the trenches with the Outlaws.”

Thorpe served as the head coach for the Hamilton Nationals from 2011-12, and was an assistant coach with the Rochester Rattlers from 2006-08, working on the staff of Outlaws Head Coach B.J. O’Hara.

Thorpe was part of O’Hara’s 2008 staff that led the Rattlers to the MLL’s Steinfeld Cup title. His career MLL record is 34-28 (.548 pct.). Overall, Thorpe’s teams are 144-62-2 (.697 pct.).

"Having Regy Thorpe join the Outlaws' coaching staff is a huge addition to our team,” O’Hara said. “As an MLL player, assistant coach and head coach, he has enjoyed much success. He knows the League and the players and knows how to win."

Thorpe played 15 seasons for the Rochester Knighthawks of the National Lacrosse League, including two seasons (2008-09) as a player/general manager. He was inducted into the team’s Hall of Fame in 2012. He is also a member of the U.S. Lacrosse Rochester Chapter Hall of Fame, where he was inducted in 2009. In 2011, Thorpe was named to the National Junior College Athletic Association Lacrosse Hall of Fame.

Thorpe also played six seasons (2001-06) for the Rochester Rattlers of the MLL, where he stayed on as an assistant coach following his playing career.

Thorpe played at Herkimer Junior College for two years, where he earned All-America honors and was named the Defenseman of the Year in 1991. He then enrolled at Syracuse and helped the Orange to the national finals in 1992. His senior season, Thorpe earned All-America honors after leading Syracuse to a national title as a team captain.

He was a four-time member of the US Indoor Team (‘02, ‘05, ‘07, ‘10), and served as team captain of the 2007 squad that won the bronze medal at the World Indoor Championship and the 2010 squad that won the Bowhunter Cup. In 2011, he served as an assistant coach for the USA Team at the Bowhunter Cup.

From 2007-09, Thorpe served as head coach for the Six Nations Arrows Junior A team, guiding the squad to the Minto Cup in 2007.

Sports Authority Field to host NCAA Men's Lacrosse Quarterfinals in 2015

$

0
The NCAA selected Denver to host the 2015 NCAA Men’s Lacrosse Quarterfinals, which will be held at the home of the Denver Outlaws, Sports Authority Field at Mile High.

The lacrosse selection continues Denver’s growing reputation as one of the great lacrosse cities of America. In the last nine years, Denver has hosted three Major League Lacrosse All-Star Games, two National Lacrosse League All-Star Games, and in 2014 will host the FIL World Lacrosse Championships.
The bid to host the event was submitted by Denver Sports, an affiliate of VISIT DENVER, in partnership with the University of Denver Athletics and Recreation, Sports Authority Field at Mile High, the Denver Broncos and Denver Outlaws.

“We are thrilled the NCAA has entrusted Denver to host this event,” said Ken Chin, executive director of Denver Sports. "This decision is a testament to the hard work put forth by our city’s grassroots lacrosse community, Denver’s two professional lacrosse teams – the Denver Outlaws and the Colorado Mammoth – and to the lacrosse program built by the University of Denver Pioneers head lacrosse coach, Hall of Famer, Bill Tierney."

Assisting in the bid was Bill Tierney, legendary head lacrosse coach of the University of Denver Pioneers, who said, “Everyone associated with lacrosse in Denver should be very excited about this announcement, and I thank all that worked so hard to make it happen. The opportunity to host such meaningful Division I games in the NCAA Tournament is something we will embrace to make the experience second to none. Our guests, visitors and television viewers will assuredly get to find out why Denver is truly ‘The Lacrosse Capital of the West.”

According to Chin, the popularity of lacrosse in Colorado has been exploding in recent years.  The Denver Outlaws have led the MLL in attendance for seven straight years and there are now more than 11,600 Colorado students playing lacrosse, almost double the amount in 2006. “The increasing popularity of lacrosse in Colorado was one of the key factors in Denver being chosen to host the 2014 FIL World Lacrosse Championships, and no doubt also played a significant role in the NCAA’s selection today,” Chin said.

He added that being strongly associated with a growing sport is a real positive for the city. “Denver will receive national television coverage and exposure from both the FIL World Lacrosse Championships and NCAA Men's Lacrosse Quarterfinals, and we're confident our local lacrosse community will come out and support both of these events."

MLL Launches 2014 Draft Contest

The 2014 MLL Collegiate Draft is tonight, Friday, January 10 at 6:30 p.m. MDT in Philadelphia, PA.

The collegiate draft has been crucial to so many teams in the past, who are trying to find those great collegiate players to make immediate impacts at the professional level. In the past two years, the Outlaws found this impact in players such as Chris Bocklet and Colorado native Eric Law, who both had record seasons in 2013. So who is going to be a part of the next great Outlaw draft class coming out of this exciting commencement into Major League Lacrosse?

This year the focus of the Outlaws will not be finding the next offensive superstar, but rather “the Outlaws need to add depth to our close defense position and to our face off area”, according to General Manager Tony Seaman. He continues, “we are always looking for the best possible lacrosse players available.”

The Outlaws will have a total of seven draft picks for 2014, including the 6th overall pick in the first round, to obtain the desired depth to both the close defense and the ever important face off position. The Outlaws have yet to comment on any specific players they will be targeting, but Seaman did comment,” We have evaluated and considered over 148 college seniors and have had a number of staff meetings involving our coaching staff and our administrative staff in determining who we are interested in and how they fit into the Outlaw scheme.”

You can follow the draft here on the blog, on Twitter or watch it live at YouTube.com/MLL.
