Jeremy Boltus ships to Afghanistan

By: Paul Ryan

Lacrosse players have to make plenty of sacrifices in their life, but Denver Outlaws attackman Jeremy Boltus will be making an even bigger one. The West Point grad will be serving in the United States Army for the next nine months, choosing country before all.
Boltus will give up playing in the 2014 season and fly to Afghanistan to take part in the “War on Terror.” This is his first deployment, so his first tour will be part of OEF 14.
“It makes me proud that I can serve this great country and be a part of one of the greatest teams this country has ever assembled,” Boltus said.
The Baldwinsville, N.Y. native has been a fantastic player in his MLL career. He’s recorded 76 points in just 33 games, registering 30 points in his first two seasons in the league. He’s played for three teams in his three years as a pro, suiting up for Hamilton, Charlotte and Denver.
However, the safety of the United States and its people come before sport for Boltus. Before he left, Jeremy had this message for the lacrosse world:
“The typical outsider would never realize how close and supportive the fans of this game truly are. I want to thank everyone for reaching out and for the endless support as I make this journey overseas. You guys really are some of the best fans in the world.
“As I start this next chapter, I'm working with John Jiloty of Inside Lacrosse to try and document what I can and keep in touch with the lacrosse world. Keep an eye out for a blog in the near future and I look forward to following another great season in the MLL. Go Denver Outlaws, time to bring a Steinfeld Trophy back to the Mile High city.”
We here at Major League Lacrosse would like to wish Jeremy and all his U.S. Army teammates the best of luck and a safe return.

You can follow Jeremy and wish him luck on Twitter and Instagram here:

KEN CLAUSEN NAMED HEADSTRONG HUMANITARIAN OF THE MONTH

Clausen’s Lacrosse Mustache Madness helped raise money for the HEADstrong Foundation

DENVER Outlaws defenseman Ken Clausen has been honored as the HEADstrong Humanitarian of the Month for his work with Lacrosse Mustache Madness.
Mustache Madness is an annual fundraising effort that was created as a way to raise funds to support the HEADstrong Foundation. Since its inception, the campaign has helped raise more than $400,000 to support the HEADstrong fight.
"I've always wanted to continue giving back to the community one way or another," Clausen said. "While I was at Virginia, I was helping out doing some student teaching and volunteering in the community. I first heard about this kind of campaign on vacation in Fiji, of all places, and I heard these guys talking about the Movember campaign that was going on over in Australia and it seemed to have been growing internationally. It sounded really cool and it worked well with me because I already had the finger 'stache and had some notoriety with this mustache [tattoo] on my finger and my stick so it plugged into things I was already known for.
"The lacrosse community as a whole is known as just such a special and tight knit community," he continued. "I mean the degrees of separation are everywhere, so I felt like an event [similar to Movember] could work really well within the community and people would hopefully unite around it. The concept of the event is to grow your mustache from October 19th through the end of November."
The HEADstrong Foundation and MLL entered into a partnership in January to help raise awareness about blood cancers to the extended lacrosse community and its fans.
The relationship between Mustache Madness and HEADstrong runs very deep, and just this past week at the 4th Annual HEADstrong Limelight Gala, Clausen was honored as the recipient of the Relentless Spirit Award for his hard work.
"It was the first time they had given this award," Clausen said. "I was incredibly honored to receive it and like I said at the event, I was completely honored to accept the award but it's really been a team effort. It wouldn't be possible without the support of the HEADStrong Foundation and the support of the lacrosse community. I consider it a team fight and everyone's been jumping in and helping out. It was an incredible honor to receive it and an amazing event that they put on and I was really grateful to be honored there."

The Outlaws added Noah Molnar and Nick Maggio to the roster

DENVER The Outlaws signed two players to the roster from the club’s open tryouts held on Sunday, March 30.
Midfielder Noah Molnar and faceoff specialist Nick Maggio were both added from the MLL player pool after their performances at the team’s tryouts. The open tryout was the first in club history and was a part of the Outlaws Academy.
“It's always extra special when you are able to hold a tryout for interested MLL players who are registered in the MLL Player Pool and you identify several that you think have the ability to help your team,” Outlaws General Manager Tony Seaman said.
Maggio played collegiate lacrosse at Merrimack College, where he set school records for faceoff percentage, faceoff wins and ground balls during his senior season. He won 59 percent of his draws that year and picked up 87 ground balls. His 410 career ground balls ranked first among active players across all three NCAA divisions at the time of his graduation. A two-time NEILA All New England selection, Maggio has spent time on the Boston Cannons practice squad.
“Nick Maggio was more than impressive this past weekend as well with his ability to dominate faceoffs. We look forward to having him go against Anthony Kelly and Steven Robarge at training camp.  That contest will give us a much better idea of his potential as a MLL faceoff midfielder.”
Molnar was selected in the sixth round (45th overall) of the 2013 MLL Collegiate Draft by the Rochester Rattlers. He played collegiate lacrosse at Lehigh University, where he picked up 71 career ground balls in his four-year career with the Mountain Hawks.
“Noah Molnar was very impressive in his workouts this past Sunday at the Denver Outlaw tryouts. He is a big, strong and athletic lacrosse player who has the ability to help us as a defensive midfielder. We look forward to having him in training camp in two weeks.”

The open tryout was the first in club history and was a part of the Outlaws Academy.

Outlaws General Manager Tony Seaman said, “we were impressed with their (Nic and Sam) athletic ability as well as their ability to shoot the ball. Both deserve the opportunity to come into our first training camp and compete for a roster spot.”

Bevacqua earned All-America honors at Stevenson University. He currently works as a volunteer assistant coach at Colorado College.
Spallitta played MCLA lacrosse at Lindenwood University, totaling 105 goals with 28 assists for 133 points in 52 career games. He is a co-director at True Lacrosse.

DENVER The Denver Outlaws have acquired midfielder Roy Lang from Florida in exchange for goalie Adam Fullerton, the team announced on Monday.

Lang (6-3, 205 pounds) has scored 23 goals with three assists for 26 points in two Major League Lacrosse seasons. He opened his career with Rochester, scoring 14 goals with three assists for 17 points, while adding 26 ground balls in 13 games as a rookie.

“Roy Lang is an excellent all-around athlete and plays well at both ends of the field,” Outlaws General Manager Tony Seaman said. “He gives us the ability to transition the ball from the defensive end to the offensive end and is always a threat to score goals. His addition to our team gives us another all-around midfielder with valuable MLL experience.”

Last season, Lang tallied nine goals and picked up 27 ground balls in 12 games for Hamilton. He was originally drafted with the 11th overall pick in the 2012 MLL collegiate draft by Rochester.

A two-time All-American at Cornell University, Lang played 65 games with 43 starts and posted 68 goals with 23 assists for 91 total points with 127 ground balls and 32 forced turnovers in his college career.

Lang was traded from Rochester along with the 11th overall pick in the 2013 MLL Collegiate Draft to Ohio in exchange for midfielder Dan Groot and the 17th, 20th and 38th selections in the 2013 Collegiate Draft. He was later traded from Ohio to Hamilton along with Ohio’s first-round draft choice in the 2015 Collegiate Draft in exchange for goalie Scott Rodgers, defenseman Chad Wiedmaier and Hamilton’s second-round pick in the 2014 Collegiate Draft.

Fullerton, who is entering his seventh MLL season in 2014, has played 12 games, totaling 252 minutes in net and has allowed 56 goals with one two-pointer for a goals-against average of 13.3. He has made 64 saves with a .533 save percentage. In addition, he has made one postseason appearance, spending 1:30 in net. Fullerton spent the last five seasons (2009-13) with Denver after opening his career with Rochester (2008).

Fullerton, a graduate of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, was originally drafted by Rochester in the third round (28th overall) of the 2008 MLL Collegiate Draft.
